Snake Bite

Posted by Freddy on Jun-19-2010

Snakes, elongate legless carnivorous reptiles, found everywhere. Snakes are usually considered as venomous but it’s a false belief. All snakes are not venomous. Venomous snakes are found in all continents except Antarctica. Cobras and vipers are highly venomous and can be fatal. Snake bite is a defensive way to escape from other animals or human beings or to hunt their prey. A snake bite as the name says is an injury caused from the bite of a snake.

The effect of a snake bite can be disastrous and depends on a number of factors like species of snake, area of the body bitten; the amounts of venom injected and so on. Even a non venomous snake bite can cause injury due to the wound caused by their fangs. The bite from a non venomous snake should be treated immediately as it may also cause severe injury to the victim. Most snake bite causes minor pain or redness of the injected area. Usually, injury is caused in the areas that are exposed like legs and arms.

Doctors’ advice the patient to be calm and patient or else the blood pressure will increase. Un-necessary panic will only raise the pulse rate and blood pressure and moves the venom into the body faster. The victim should be kept as immobile as possible. In Ancient times death rates due to snakebites were large but nowadays the medical science has progressed so much that a snake bite is considered as a simple thing. It is good if one can identify the snake, if so the treatment will be easy as this does varies from species to species. Usually Rattlesnake, Copperhead, Cottonmouth Water Moccasin, and Coral Snake are considered as the most poisonous ones.

Immediate medical attention is much better than self medication. Simple Ayurvedic treatments for snake bites are yet to be known to the world. The treatment here also depends upon the species of the snake. Several medicinal herbs are available in nature which are made use of, and has proved to be more effective than modern medicines.

Posted by Freddy on Jun-12-2010

Psoriasis is a chronic, autoimmune disease that appears on the skin. It occurs when the immune system sends out faulty signals that speed up the growth cycle of skin cells. Psoriasis is not contagious. The scaly patches caused by psoriasis, called psoriatic plaques, are areas of inflammation and excessive skin production. There are mainly five types of psoriasis; they are plaque, guttate, inverse, putsular, and erythrodermic. Psoriasis can occur at any age but is commonly seen in the start stage of adultery. It can occur at any part of the body including the scalp. Ayurveda has effective treatment for Psoriasis. Ayurveda, coined by combining two Sanskrit words, ‘ayur’ and ‘veda’ is the traditional treatment methodology used in India. Ayurveda aims at curing human illness and thereby supporting human life. Ayurvedic concepts treat each individual as unique and thus the treatment for each one varies accordingly.

The causative factor for psoriasis is still a mystery. Some consider that psoriasis is caused due to the excessive production of skin cells and some others believe that psoriasis is caused because of immunity disorder. Hereditary factors also affect this issue, which is accepted world widely. Even stress is considered as a factor that causes psoriasis. From the researches done, It is found that ‘Panchakarma’ (five actions) can be considered as effective treatment for psoriasis. Panchakarma includes Nasya (nasal therapy), Vamana (vomiting), Virechana (purging), and two kinds of Vasti (enema). Panchakarma is meant to purify the body by eliminating the toxins.

Diet restrictions have to be maintained when the treatment is done. The patient has to follow complete vegetarian diet. Yogurt, chilies, black gram and excess salt should be avoided from the daily routine. Stress and infection can make psoriasis worse.

It’s the mind game…

579387 x 75347 = ?
Can anyone out calculate this in less than 10 seconds without the help of a calculator?
I challenge you. You can’t do it……
Oh Please!!!
Please don’t faint seeing these numbers. Even I used to faint when used to I see big numbers to calculate. I know it’s the same for many out there. When I was a student, numbers used to chase and scare me in my dreams. My mathematics teacher was a regular visitor in my dream, who used to come with a big scale in her hand asking me to solve the problems. Trigonometry and algebra used to be my worst nightmare. I had math phobia but now no big numbers can scare me. I learned a small trick recently and now I don’t run when I see numbers.
No, no, don’t get confused. I don’t have anything to do with mathematics and neither am trying to teach you mathematics. But I thought I will share a bit of what I learned recently.
Lately, I get to know about Vedic Mathematics. Vedic Mathematics is the name of the monumental work done by Late Jagad Guru Swami Sri Bharati Krishna Tirthaji Maharaj. It basically refers to a set of sixteen mathematical formulae discovered by him. Each of the sixteen formulae talks about a separate branch of Mathematics. These sixteen formulae can be readily applied to wide range of practical problems and applications including Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Calculus, Conics and others. So you don’t have to sit and storm your brain and when u see tow six digit numbers to multiply.
The Vedic mathematical formulae can be easily applied to solve any kid of mathematical problems. Various complex mathematical problems which require large number of steps to solve can be easily solved in few steps. Many times the problems can be solved mentally without writing any transitional steps. The Vedic mathematic system is coherent, direct and easy to understand. It makes a person to do calculations 10 to 15 times faster. Vedic mathematics will not only useful to the students those who struggle in mathematics but its also useful in general life also.
Just throw away your calculators and try out this simple trick.

The Ultimate Truth

Posted by Freddy on May-29-2010

Way back in 1984 on 31st October a news story shocked the entire nation. It filled grief and agony in everyone who supported her. Yes, the assassination of Indira Gandhi. The major reason for the shock was the person behind the assassination. She was killed by her own bodyguards, Satwant Singh and Beant Singh to avenge the Military attack on ‘The Golden Temple’ during the Operation Blue Star. It sounds really hideous, b’coz she was murdered by the person who should protect her. It was not just an assassination but the murder of the trust.

I was just a kid when she passed away. For me, it was just a matter of another holiday. But when I grew up I started thinking deeply on it. Can someone forget all their duties and responsibilities for the religion they praise for? Even now I couldn’t get the answer for this. Devotion to a religion or having faith in God is fine but one should never be blinded or driven by it. Her bodyguard killed her for the fact that she ordered the military to the premises of The Golden Temple during operation Blue Star, but they where blinded to see the reason that what made her to take such a decision.

Cold Blooded murders are part of religious fanaticism. Most of the times people are mislead. Newspapers and channels are filled with such news stories. Every day we can see at least one such news. Majority of the population is educated but still why we see such instances happening. The old saying that one should never discuss politics or religion may have made sense 50 years ago. The venomous hatred of religious zealots has become so acrid that it will certainly lead to violence and even death. Why can’t people just stop for a while and think and ask yourself the question. What will we get out of this bloody slaughter? Nothing… That is the ultimate answer and the ultimate truth.

A few days back, I read a news article which kept me confused for some days. It was about Ansel Bourne, who was a Clergyman who was missing from his native place for two months and was later on found in strange situation in Norristown. One day Ansel drew $500 from his bank and boarded a Pawtucket car and disappeared for two months, later his nephew received a telegram saying that a man claiming to be Ansel was in Norristown and was acting strangely. But in fact Ansel was not behaving strangely but he had found himself in a strange town in a small fruit store. His story was really strange for me; it made me think can things happen like this. The story took a twist when it was found that Ansel Bourne was a patient of Multiple Personality. Ansel Broune, who had gone to Norristown and rented a small store, stocked it with candy and fruit and had been doing business there as Mr. Brown, living in the back of his shop. His behavior was normal to everyone. Brown didn’t even know Ansel Broune and it was the same for Ansel. In this case the first personality did not know the second, nor did the second know the first.

This tale about Ansel Bourne made me do a little research on Multiple Personality Disorder. It made me think is there someone else hidden inside us. Multiple Personality Disorder describes a condition in which a person displays multiple identities each with its own prototype of perceiving and interacting with the atmosphere. The individuals diagnosed with Multiple Personality Disorder shows a variety of symptoms with wide variation. They can show multiple mannerisms, attitudes and beliefs that are not similar to each other, they tend to be short tempered and show sudden anger without a justified reason. They never show intimacy to anyone and try to remain cut off from everything. They have auditory hallucinations of the personalities inside their mind and they have severe memory loss. The patients may also experience an extremely broad array of symptoms that resemble epilepsy, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, mood disorders, post traumatic stress disorder, personality disorders and eating disorders.

Studies have revealed that in some patients this disorder developed due to insufficient childhood nurturing, and an innate ability to dissociate memories or experiences from consciousness. A high percentage of patients have been reported child abuse. But child abuse is not the single factor that results in this disorder because there are many patients of Multiple personality who have not reported child abuse. The treatment for Multiple Personality Disorder attempts to reconnect the identities of dissimilar alters into single a identity. The treatment focuses on the symptoms and tends to relieve the grieving aspects of the condition and also ensures the safety of the individual. Treatment methods may include psychotherapy and medications for comorbid disorders.

Some therapist use behavioral treatments such as responding to a single identity and using more traditional therapy once consistent response is established. It has been stated that treatment recommendations that follow from models that do not believe in the traumatic origins of Multiple Personality Disorder might be harmful due to the fact that they ignore the posttraumatic symptomatology of people with Multiple Personality Disorder.

Safe Mantra for Diabetes

Posted by Freddy on May-15-2010

Sweet delicacies and chocolates are loved by everyone. But sometimes these mouth watering sweets are hazardous to those who are diabetic. Diabetes caused by insulin deficiency is one of the most common diseases. Though diabetics have many curing methods, Ayurveda is considered as the best treatment for diabetics. Ayurveda is the safest way to have a healthy life. Ayurveda, known as the backbone of Indian Medicines has proven to be a curing method with no side effects.
In Ayurveda, there is treatment for every disease. It may vary on each person depending upon his or her physical and mental state. Diabetes, a common disease now seen in every individual and can be cured through Ayuvedic treatment. Ayurveda suggests that diabetes can be cured by having a control over the daily diet.
The two common types of diabetes are caused through insulin resistance and insulin deficiency. Insulin resistance is the state when the pancreas produce excess amount of insulin and the human body is unable to utilize the Insulin generated by Pancreas. Insulin deficiency is the state when pancreas fail to generate the amount of insulin required for the body. This disease is caused because of the mal functioning of the pancreatic cells. High blood pressure, high cholesterol and hereditary factors also cause diabetics.
Diabetes, according to Ayurveda is a disease, which can be prevented by controlling the daily diet. Ayurveda suggests medicines, closely related with nature to prevent most of the diseases.

Landslides

Posted by Freddy on May-8-2010

Landslide frequently occurs in mountainous areas and can cause serious damage. Roads, bridges, and houses may be destroyed and involve huge financial resources to repair. Landslides are caused due to geological factors, morphological factors, physical factors and factors associated with human activity. The causes of landslide may be considered to be factors that made the slope vulnerable to failure, that predispose the slope to becoming unstable. Trigger is just a single event that finally initiates the landslide.
A landslide is primarily a combination of several geological processes that include earth movements like extensive slope failures, rocks falling, and debris flow. These ground movements may take place in a coastal, offshore, and onshore environment. Gravity is the main force that causes landslides, in addition to other features that affect the ground stability.
Normally, the ground characteristics develop particular sub-surface soil conditions that cause the slope failure. However, the real landslide needs a trigger before it can be initiated. It is normally feasible to recognize the main landslide origin and the landslide triggers. The trigger may be a process concerning the weather, or a stimulation that produces instant slope reaction. Usually, such a movement is generated due to an alteration in the slope stresses. These types of geological formations are common in mountainous areas. Slope stabilization will be necessary to reduce the probability of landslides.
Sensors have been developed that are used for the landslide warning and detection by monitoring slope, displacement, rainfall, and flow. A careful analysis of this data can assist in the determination of the weak spots, and the ground water pressures. Data regarding the rate of slide movement is available that can forecast the state of the landslide process. Geotechnical analysis, including the study of slope stability, seismic behavior, and assessment of the site can be useful to provide an early warning of the landslide. The sensors can also provide early information regarding the harsh weather, and the slope conditions that are unsafe.

A huge figure wearing elaborated and heavy outfit including headdress, layers of skirt and jewellery, his big red eyes are rolling on a green colored face and his fingers are showing certain signs. Yes… I am talking about Kathakali, the ancient dance form.

Originated from the dance drama form Ramanattam, Kathakali is a classical Indian Dance Drama. Kathakali is a unique combination of literature, expression, dance, enactment, music and painting. The word Kathakali has derived from a Sanskrit word that literally means Story telling. Though only few are staged these days there are almost 101 Classical Kathakali stories. The most popular among the 101 stories are Nalacharitam, Duryodhana Vadham, Kalyanasougandhikam and Keechakavadham. The language used to tell the story is Manipravalam.

Traditionally, a Kathakali performance is usually conducted at night and ends in early morning. Nowadays it isn’t difficult to see performances as short as three hours or even lesser. Kathakali is performed in front of huge lamps know as “Kalivilakku”. The historic representation in Kathakali is a four fold scheme. The first is Angika that is related to the movements of body and limbs. Second is Vachika that is connected to vocal presentations of the performer and is focussed on the pronunciation, modulation of voice accents & percussion. Third is Satvika, which is simply the portrayal of psychic condition, and the last one is Ahraya that includes costume, make up, stage props etc.

A Kathakali actor uses immense concentration, skill and physical stamina, gained from regimented training based on Kalaripayattu, the ancient martial art of Kerala, to prepare for his demanding role. The expressions are derived from Natyashastra and are classified into nine as in most Indian classical art forms. The main facial expressions of a Kathakali artist are the ‘Navarasas’. The performer has to be very careful regarding the hand movement. The performers are trained to connote over five hundred words with eye expressions and sixty-four basic hand poses. It requires a rigorous training to make the body flexible.
The make-up in Kathakali is quite bright and colourful. the make-up can be classified into five basic sets namely Pachcha, Kathi, Kari, Thaadi, and Minukku. It is so impressive that the tone and colours depict the nature of the characters. If the performer’s face is coloured green, it is the hero of the story. Similarly, the villains have red or black faces and the holy men & women have yellow faces. The performer has to undergo a long make up session that can last for four to five hours. The herbal facial paint is made of rice power and natural colors. They perform wearing elaborated and heavy outfits including headdress, layers of skirts, and jewellery.
The art of Kathakali is beautiful with natural and graceful movements, elaborate gestures, picturesque costumes, grand harmonic make-up suggested by herbal plants of the forests, and the vigorous & triumphant music. This art form was evolved in the Malabar region, but today is directly linked with Kerala’s soul.

Tring Tring… Tring Tring… Its ringing everywhere… yes it is the mobile phone, a wonderful device invented by Martin Cooper , which is now available with all the latest facilities like wi-fi, internet application, motion detection, organic keypad, touch screen, hi-fi camera and extended memory and in cutting edge designs. It has made our life so simple and fast. It has reduced the distance between the hearts. The mobile phone, also known as cellular phone, has become one of the most successful inventions. The convenience brought by this technology indeed changed the life of many people and society.

Many things such as banking, gathering information such as reports or latest news, control the share market via GPRS etc are what the technology helped to improve and ease the life of people. Japan is the country which the mobile phone technology develops the fastest in the world. But have we ever thought about the harmful radiation waves emitted by these amazing devices when we use them for long hours. Many scientific studies have investigated possible health effects of mobile phone radiations.

The mobile phones have many health issues associated with it. These mobile phones emit harmful radio waves and some part of these radio waves is absorbed by human head. The radio waves emitted by a GSM handset can have a peak power of 2 watts, and a US analogue phone had a maximum transmit power of 3.6 watts. The maximum power output from a mobile phone is regulated by the mobile phone standard it follows and by the regulatory agency in each country. Another major problem caused by the mobile phones is the thermal effect. The continuous usage of cell phones for longs hours can cause heating of head and cornea of eyes and can produce cataracts.

Another area of concern is the radiation emitted by the fixed infrastructure used in mobile telephony, such as base stations and their antennas, which provide the link to and from mobile phones. In order to protect the population living around base stations and users of mobile handsets, governments and regulatory bodies adopt safety standards, which translate to limits on exposure levels below a certain value. There are many proposed national and international standards, but that of the International Commission for Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection is the most respected one, and has been adopted so far by more than 80 countries. Some national radiation advisory authorities have recommended measures to minimize exposure to their citizens. According to these bodies the exposure can be minimized by using hands- free to decrease the radiation to the head and by keeping the mobile phones away from body.
